Perched along Long Island’s Gold Coast, Sands Point Preserve is where nature, history, and family-friendly experiences come together in perfect harmony. From grand mansions and wooded trails to immersive seasonal events, this iconic estate offers something special for every visitor.
A Look Into the Past
Sands Point Preserve sits on the original Gould-Guggenheim Estate, a 216-acre property once home to some of America’s wealthiest families. The estate features three historic mansions:
Castle Gould: Built in 1902 as a replica of Ireland’s Kilkenny Castle, it served as the estate’s carriage house and stable.
Hempstead House: This elegant 50,000-square-foot mansion became the main residence, hosting high society events and philanthropic endeavors.
Falaise: Constructed in the 1920s by Harry Guggenheim, this French-Norman-style mansion boasts original furnishings, artwork, and architecture.
Today, the Sands Point Preserve Conservancy maintains the grounds and hosts cultural programs year-round.
What to Explore
Visitors can enjoy walking trails, picnic areas, wildlife observation, and peaceful beach views along Long Island Sound.
Hempstead House Garden: Once a formal rose garden, this area is now filled with native and pollinator-friendly plants. Fountains, mature trees, and unique stonework create a serene and scenic space for reflection or photos.
Trails: Stroll through meadows, woodlands, and waterfront paths along the Preserve’s 1.9-mile loop.
Woodland Playground: A fenced-in, nature-themed play space makes this a great destination for families with young children.
